Womad Memory Twist Interactive HTML5 app

Client: WOMAD
Launch date: 04/08/2012

Aerian Studios collaborated with Richard White of Creative Wiltshire to develop an iPad app for WOMAD festival (World of Music, Arts and Dance).

This interactive visualisation of 30 years of memories and images from the UK WOMAD festivals was made up of memories collected from the internet, images from the Real World archives and images submitted by users via social media campaigns and a call to action on the WOMAD website.

We created a flowing, twisting mosaic visualising each memory as a square slice. The overall aesthetic of the piece focussed on the idea of slices/squares set in another dimension - either time as in the case of the memories or space as in the furniture and shipping container art space that housed the installation.

Using a phoneGap base project, the app was built in HTML5 and used our own extremely efficient JavaScript touch-ready ASScrollView.

Data from diverse sources was collated and normalised, then passed through a Zend application to create assets at different sizes and mark-up for the thousands of memories we’d collected.

The art installation consisted of 3 iPads, one of which was connected to a projector. Users could watch or choose to get hands-on and interact with the flow of memories. Aerian Studios styled the exhibition space to fit with the atmosphere of the festival and to tie in with the aesthetic of the work.

WOMAD had a record 37,000 festival goers attend their 30th anniversary - including Prince Harry. The installation ran for 9 hours a day for 3 days with no hiccups - a testement to both the choice of hardware and the high standard of development work.
