BBC Blast is an incredible user content rich web development project developed by the BBC to help young people express their creativity. BBC Blast environment allows users to upload their own content into cross referenced categories with tagging to improve the usability of the search and improved information architecture. With events all around the UK, and a wealth of invaluable advice from professionals in the form of the "How to" section, BBC Blast is a really usefull commodity for any young person looking to move into the creative arts, who may otherwise find the prospect very daunting.
We were very proud to be asked to work on BBC Blast. It's a massive project, even by BBC's standards; encompassing very complex data handling, cross referencing, content tagging, content management systems, booking systems, accessibility, web development and widgets. The site works within a complex taxonomy allowing for multiple levels of complexity to be hidden behind the scenes.
The BBC Blast site was certainly something that stretched both the BBC internal staff and ourselves in terms of the possibilities of client side web development and aesthetic output. The marrying of such large referenced data proved to be a massive task, and bringing it all together took a herculean effort from all at and involved with the BBC. For our part, we're pleased to be able to help produce such a wonderful site / resource for young people.
If you haven't checked it out already, go to www.bbc.co.uk/blast now and have a look for yourself.
