BBC Media Action Web Design and Development

Client: BBC
Launch date: 27/02/2012

BBC Media Action (aka World Service Trust) is the international development charity of the BBC.

Aerian Studios implemented the Media Action Brand in a complete re-design and re-build of the WST's old site http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/trust as-well as a rugged newsletter template to withstand being viewing in multiple environments and email clients.

The new BBC Media Action site was implemented using the BBC Forge Platform consisting of a LAMP Stack with native Zend Framework extensions and Memcache.

The core site functionality was implemented using the BBC's new Corporate Framework. This gave editorial staff total flexibility when authoring new pages for the site via the iSite - BBC's Content Management System based on Alfresco. Completely new site pages can be authored quickly and easily by using one of the site's templates and then adding several Panel blocks to it.

Various caching layers and strategies were implemented to ruggedize and protect the site during periods of high traffic and server load. Additionally, submissions made using the site's contact and newsletter subscription forms are sent over SSL encrypted to protect visitor's data and privacy.

The website showcases the impact of the work undertaken by BBC Media Action encourages online and offline engagement with existing and future stakeholders. This is intended to better meet the business needs of a range of internal stakeholders, particularly in the areas of business development and donor relations, policy development and external communications (intended to better support key departments).

The redesigned website will provide these stakeholders with regular, up-to-date communications tools and resources for use in business development settings. The need for these resources was identified through the stakeholder analysis conducted in late 2010. The aim of the project is therefore to develop something more comprehensive and better-designed to showcase the WST's work.
